The owner of Santo Stefano, part of the Pontino group of islands, situated north-west of Naples, is “open to negotiations” for the sale of about 25 acres of the island out of a total 28.
The seller is reported to have already received offers for the island, described as an “unspoiled natural paradise”, although “negotiations, as well as price, are confidential”. The island boasts natural views, beautiful sea and a seabed rich in fish and marine flora, making it a unique setting for those who love the sea and water sports.
The remaining three acres not for sale belong to the government and is the site a prison built in 1795 when the Burbon royal dynasty ruled Naples and Sicily. They also ruled, at various times, Parma, Piacenza, Lucca, & Etruria.
The so-called 'celebrity prison' saw many famous inmates housed in its cells. Former Italian President Sandro Pertini was imprisoned there under the Fascists as well as the writer Luigi Settembrini, the brigand Carmine Crocco, the anarchist Gaetano Bresci and the bandit Sante Pollastri.
The prison closed in 1964.
But you don't have to buy an island to enjoy Sardinia or the coastline below Naples.
